The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (earlier called The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India) was first established in 1944.
On 28th May 1959, the Institute was established by a special Act of Parliament, namely, the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959 as a statutory professional body for the regulation of the profession of cost and management accountancy.
It was a registered company under the Companies Act with the object of promoting, regulating, and developing the profession of Cost Accountancy.
It is a professional accountancy body in India under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and the Government of India.
A Cost Accountant is a person who offers to perform or perform services involving the costing or pricing of goods and services or the preparation, verification, or certification of cost accounting and related statements.
The headquarters of ICMAI is situated in Kolkata. The Institute operates with its four main regional offices situated in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. The Institute has 101 chapters in India and 10 chapters abroad.
The institute has 85,000 members till 2020. Every final examination completed student after obtaining 3+ years of experience in the field of Cost & Management Accountancy and other related areas can apply for Associate Membership.
